Hotels in Hereford and Herefordshire with special
offers and weekend breaks
The City of Hereford set on the banks of the River Wye is
a delightful mixture of historic and contemporary architecture and although
a city, it has a distinctive and friendly market town feel.
Hereford is also one of the most ancient and interesting of English Cathedral
towns. Its ecclesiastical history goes back to Saxon times, for it became a
bishopric in as early as 673.A.D. The present
Cathedral
dates from the 11thCentury, when the ruins of the Saxon church were rebuilt
by Robert de Losinga. Although in point of size one of the smaller of the English
Cathedrals it is an architectural gem of the first order and is well worth a
visit while on a weekend break or short city break. Two features of unusual
interest are the priceless
Mappa
Mundi, a 13th-century cartographer`s interpretation of the world, and the
world's largest
Chained
Library of ancient books. The mighty Norman cathedral is also famous for
hosting the Three Choirs Festival – Europe`s oldest music festival. Musicians
from around the world grace the Cathedral for this historic event. One of the
composers most strongly associated with the festival is Sir Edward Elgar, who
composed many of his greatest works while living in Hereford during the early
years of the 20th century.
The River Wye, flowing through the City on its course from Plinlimmon to Chepstow
where it joins the Severn, is crossed by two bridges in the city. The Old Wye
Bridge is now enhanced by the contemporary Left Bank Village where visitors
can enjoy views towards the Cathedral or watch boats navigating their way through
its gentle waters.
For those who enjoy shopping while on weekend breaks you can enjoy the charming
Church Street and Capuchin Yard with a unique small selection of shops and places
to meet and eat; while in High Town and Maylord Orchards Shopping Centre there
is a wide selection of High Street store names. Down by the River Wye, the elegant
Left Bank Village offers the visitor that something different for shopping and
dining.
